Lot Essay

While most jade vases are carved with a variety of archaistic or floral themes around the body, the lapidary craftsmen chose to leave the body of this vessel plain and polished, using the attractive sheen to emphasise the beauty and purity of the material. In this instance, the intricately worked elephant-head handles are well balanced against a simple, undecorated body.
