Mark of Carl Blank, St Petersburg, 1899-1904
Rectangular with rounded sides, the body and hinged cover chased with sunburst design from the cabochon sapphire thumb-piece, the cover applied with the crowned entwined initials 'MM' enamelled in translucent red and opaque white, with integral vesta compartment and cord attachment, marked inside body and cover

Lot Essay

The initials are those of Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich (4/16 June 1868 - 26 April 1929), second son, third child of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich and his wife, Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna, née Princess Cecile of Baden. He married in 1891 Sophie, Countess of Merenberg, known as the Countess of Torby.
