Lot Essay

Reynolds regularly painted his own portrait throughout his career and the present image in which he depicts himself in the robes of an Oxford Doctor of Civil Law, dates to the 1770s. At this time, the artist was experimenting with self portraits in the manner of Rembrandt and other examples of differing but related types include those at the Royal Academy, London and the Uffizi, Florence.
