Lot Essay

Lot 1174 Herons by Chen Wen Hsi is an outstanding signature work of the artist, exemplifying his advanced handling of traditional ink and brush painting. The depicted herons are singular in their abstracted appearances, cascading and graceful lines running vertically down the scroll format. Drawing from eclectic pictorial conventions, Herons demonstrate how Chen Wen Hsi saw his canvas or scroll paper first and foremost as a field for composition. Lines and colours are the most essential elements to the creation of pictorial elements.
