Lot Essay

Diary: 12 February 1969
New York, like an ever changing chimera is still marvellous under its white mantle of snow: it's a city built by gods for gods and mortals like me who live in it go about giving thanks for the privilage [sic]: for if St Augustine had been placed in Park Avenue with his back to the Pan Am Building facing South, he'd have verily thought that he's in the City of God about which he had written fourteen centuries ago.

1 October 1970
New York - Manhattan in particular, is a dazzling hell-heaven on earth. It's truly the most original city in the world, churning out the past present and future day and night non-stop.

15 November 1972
Vincent Van Gogh said of color: 'The more I get old, ugly, viscious, ill and poor, the more I want to take my revenge by painting in brilliant colors.' As for me, I will take my revenge (if the Lord will postpone putting my number up for some time: after all, what's Time to Him?) in longevity - and I will paint, as I am doing at present, pure Joy in pure colors! There is nothing more resplendent in the world than bright colors, dazzling like the spectrum, iridescent like opals
