Lot Essay

In a letter to the present owner, confirming the attribution to Giovanni Paolo Panini in full, Professor Ferdinando Arisi notes that the composition enjoyed great success; another autograph version with variants is in a private collection in Nice, while the figural group has been used by Panini and his studio in several other compositions. Professor Arisi also suggests that the figure in pink, with a red cap, could be a self-portrait of the artist.
