Lot Essay

Known as War and Peace, Van Dyck's 1637 portrait depicts George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol (1612-1677), in black silk with papers and an armillary sphere at his feet, and his brother-in-law William Russell, 1st Duke of Bedford (1616-1700), in red with his helmet and breast-plate at his feet. On the outbreak of the Civil War they fought on opposing sides, Lord Bristol for the Royalists and Lord Bedford for the Parliamentarians.
