Lot Essay

This painting is number two from a set of thirty-one individual paintings illustrating the 108 scenes from the 11th century text of Avadanakalpalata of Ksemendra. In this painting, Shakyamuni Buddha is surrounded by narrative scenes from the first and second teaching stories.
