Lot Essay

A marble Roman bust of Clytie from 40-50 AD was in the collection of Charles Townley and can be seen in Johann Zoffany's 1781-83 work 'Charles Townley and his Friends in the Townley Gallery, 33 Park Street, Westminster'.
Clytie was a water-nymph in love with Apollo, who did not return the affection. She pined away and after nine days turned into a sunflower, her head following Apollo through the skies.
