Lot Essay

This lantern is based on Thomas Chippendale's design published in the third edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director, 1762, pl. CLIII and reproduced here. Among the George III style lanterns of this model sold at auction, one was sold, Christie's, London, 25 September 2007, lot 95 (875) while another was sold, Sotheby's, London, 22 March 2002, lot 17 (£10,800).
