Hayter's paintings of the 1960s were preoccupied with creating the sensation of movement through the arrangement of intersecting lines and rhythms. In his own words:
'Lines convey motion and direction as in life ... The systems of lines are like nets which enable us to see the wind and feel the wave ... all our perception reaches us in terms of rhythm' (see Exhibition catalogue, An Exhibition of Recent Paintings by Stanley William Hayter, University of Art Museum, Texas, 1967, p. 4).
