Lot Essay

Hermann Herzog was born in Bremen and was known as a landscape painter. He studied in Düsseldorf under Schirmer, Achenbach and Gude. He began his travels in Europe, but moved to North America, settling in Philadelphia.

This example is similar to works that were sold in New York in the artist's lifetime. The subject is particularly evocative of the goldrushes that occurred in North America at this time in California and the Klondike.
