Lot Essay

For a monumental Mintons bowl with similar design elements, exhibited on the stand of Mr. Percival Daniell, see The Illustrated Catalogue of the Paris International Exhibition, 1878, London, 1878, p. 24. Also see Joan Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p. 96-97 for comparative pieces designed by Christopher Dresser and see the V & A Museum website for an Album of Designs by Christopher Dresser, vol. 2, ref. (E.1499-1987) for a number of related elemental line drawings. Also see Christie's, New York, 9 April 2008, lot 279 for a similar set of plates, perhaps monogrammed for Minton Campbell family.

A crowned 'MA' monogrammed service was made by Minton in 1874 for HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, on the occasion of his marriage to Maria Alexandrovna, daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Known to be a patron of the Minton factory and with the family name of Saxe-Coburg, it is not impossible that the present bowls, each with the monogram 'AS' beneath a ducal coronet, were also made for Prince Alfred, 2nd son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
