Lot Essay
Whilst tempting to suggest an attribution to a major London cabinet-maker, there is no single feature of this pair of armchairs which allows a firm attribution. However, the arm decoration is closely related to that on a pair of chairs from Hinton House and possibly supplied by Vile & Cobb, Hallett or Grendey. The leg design is seen on many mid-18th century chairs and is related to that on a set of seat-furniture comprising at least six needlework-covered chairs and a pair of stools. A pair of armchairs from that suite was sold through Christie's, New York, 18 October 2001, lot 150 ($226,000) and the same pair was offered recently by the late Tom Devenish, Sotheby's, New York, 24 April 2008, lot 9. Another pair of related armchairs was sold by the late Dick Turpin, Christie's, London, 9 March 2006, lot 75 (£78,000 including premium).
