Lot Essay

Born in Berlin, Henry Jolles was a talented pianist and composer who went on to become a professor at the Cologne Music Academy in 1928. In the midst of the Second World War, he emigrated to Brazil where he accepted a teaching position at the Escola Livre de Música in São Paulo. Among his students, Henrique de Curitiba (1934-2008) is perhaps the best-known.
