2 parts in one, 2o (323 x 223 mm). Engraved title after R. Elstrac, Ben Johnson's poem "The Minde of the Front" facing title, large engraved portrait vignette on title, 8 double-page engraved maps, ornamental initials, errata leaf at end (Johnson's poem cut round and mounted, preliminary leaves reinforced along inner margin, small marginal tears or repairs to a few leaves, occasional marginal dampstaining and browning.) Contemporary calf gilt arabesque stamp in center of panels (rebacked, old spine laid down).
FIRST EDITION of Raleigh's ambitious project in which he sought to to tell the history of the world from Creation up to his own times. Written while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after being charged with conspiracy by James I, Raleigh's chronicle was a tribute to his patron Prince Henry.
