Two parts in one, 8o (199 x 127 mm). Engraved title and 56 (of 64?) engraved plates (part I), engraved title and 83 plates (part II); most printed on rectos and versos (some captions cropped). Contemporary French calf gilt, gilt arms on sides.

FIRST EDTION of Rameau's second book, in which he declared that he improved upon Feuillet's method of notation. The first part of this manual discusses performance of various steps including demi coupé, coupé, bourée, chassé, and pirouette. Through the use of text and tables, Rameau also provides discussion on an improved and simplified version of Feuillet notation, the eighteenth-century system of recording dances. The second part of the text consists of notations for twelve duets choreographed by French dancer and choreographer, Guillaume-Louis Pécour. While Rameau's notation was not generally adopted, his information about the shortcomings of Beauchamp-Feuillet notation provides dance historians with clarifications about the execution of the steps. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no copy has appeared at auction in at least thirty years. Beaumont, pp. 149-150 (describing 64 plates in part I; second part corresponds with this copy).
