PLAYFAIR, William. A Letter on our Agricultural Distresses, their Causes and Remedies; accompanied with Tables and Copper-plate Charts, shewing and comparing The Prices of Wheat, Bread, and Labour, from 1565 to 1821. Addressed to the Lords and Commons. London: William Clowes for William Sams, 1821.

8o (216 x 134mm). 3 folding hand-colored engraved charts, including one with aquatint (last plate with fore-edge slightly darkened and frayed). Original drab boards (rebacked in cloth preserving portion of original printed spine label); folding box. Provenance: George Morris (signature on title-page).

FIRST EDITION of Playfair's final work, with fine examples of the graphical method of statistical representation which he had introduced to the economic field in his Commercial and Political Atlas (1786). These charts represent the price of wheat in relation to weekly wages of a "good" mechanic. "Here Playfair plotted three parallel time-series: prices, wages, and the reigns of British kings and Queens"--Tufte, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, p. 34 (illustrated). Goldsmiths 23129; Kress C755; Einaudi 4467.
