Lot Essay

Gustav Doré was a prolific illustrator, painter and sculpture as well as a noted member of Parisian society. His talent became apparent at an early age. He was a young man of approximately eighteen when the present work was painted, who had already exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1847. The subject of Deer in a forest was one which Doré returned to many times both in oil and watercolour.
