Lot Essay

Painted in 1907 or 1908. Kelly wrote to Charles Nalder, an early owner of the picture in 1959, explaining that this portrait was painted on the sitter's wedding night: 'She posed for me quite a lot. I have never seen a flatter face, and she was very attractive to paint. I have always called all the pictures of her 'The woman who married' and that is what you had better call her too'.
