Lot Essay

Born in Czechoslovakia, Spencer moved to England in 1936. She married Herbert Spencer, the pioneering Graphic Designer, and founder of the Typographica journal in 1945. A year later she began at the Slade School of Fine Art & Central School of Textile Design.

Spencer played an active role in the Post- War abstract art movement in both Britain and the Continent. Her work has been exhibited alongside artists like Terry Frost, Jean Arp, Ben Nicholson and Sonia Delauney.

In 1952 Spencer exhibited at The Mirror and the Square, AIA Gallery, as well as at the Galerie Arnaud, Paris.
