Vase-shaped on circular pedestal foot, the handles terminating at the body in foliage, engraved with a border of Greek key decoration, one side with presentation inscription to Sir James Montgomery from The Peeblesshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1804, the other side with coat-of-arms, on ebonised wood soccle

The arms are those of Sir James Montgomery, 1st Bt. of Stanhope (1720-1803).

Lot Essay

Although the arms are those of Sir James Montgomery, 1st Bt, the inscription is dated one year after his death so it was presumably presented to his son the 2nd Bt.
