A gilt plaque inset into the interior cover of the travelling case is engraved 'Margaret Fleming Montgomery Youngest Daughter of Sir James Montgomery B^t. of Stanhope Ob^t at Torquay February 1840 Aetat 19 M^r^s Musgrave May 1839'

Lot Essay

Margaret Fleming Montgomery was a daughter of Sir James Montgomery, 2nd Bt. of Stanhope (see lot 54) and his second wife, Helen. She died unmarried, a year after the present portrait was painted.
Mrs Musgrave, the artist, exhibted at the Royal Academy between 1821 and 1847. She married the portrait painter William Musgrave in 1832/1833.
