oval, 3¾ in. (95 mm.) high, rectangular frosted gilt-metal mount within velvet-lined hinged brown leather travelling case
A gilt plaque inset into the interior cover of the travelling case is engraved 'Margaret Fleming Montgomery Youngest Daughter of Sir James Montgomery Bt. of Stanhope Obt at Torquay February 1840 Aetat 19 Mrs Musgrave May 1839'

Lot Essay

Margaret Fleming Montgomery was a daughter of Sir James Montgomery, 2nd Bt. of Stanhope (see lot 54) and his second wife, Helen. She died unmarried, a year after the present portrait was painted.
Mrs Musgrave, the artist, exhibted at the Royal Academy between 1821 and 1847. She married the portrait painter William Musgrave in 1832/1833.
