The carpet comes with a copy of the original purchaser's receipt from Ali Khan Amoghli, dated Sh.1312 (1934 AD).
The invoice with the header of "Ali Kahn Amogli, Meched Perse" shows handwritten notes in Persian and English about: the knot count of the carpet which has been sold and its material - wool, with silk borders (for which extra was charged), the price charged for each, the purchaser's name, the total price and the date of payment. It is made out to Mr Hartmann of the National Bank of Persia.
This carpet was purchased from Amoghli just as his business was beginning to thrive. Reza Shah Pahlavi had come to the throne in 1925, and had consolidated his power thereafter. He furnished a number of his palaces with the carpets woven by his preferred weaver, Ali Khan Amogli. Many of them can still be seen there today, for example in the Niavaran Palace in north Tehran. He would have been the most fashionable of all weavers from whom Mr Hartmann could order his carpet in 1934.
