Lot Essay

Bill English studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1952-56, and at Leeds College of Art, 1956-57, where he was taught by Harry Thubron. This painting was executed while the artist was living near Harrogate and incorporates aspects of the Yorkshire countryside, such as sheep and bales of hay. These are represented by sacking in manner of influential Italian tachist artist, Alberto Burri. Between 1972 and 1988 English was Principal of the Norwich School of Art, and from 1973-76 he was Chairman of the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society. He is a trustee of the Chelsea Arts Club and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
