linocut with hand-colouring in gouache, 1937-38, on Japan paper, a extremely rare impression of Lewison's second, final state, signed and dated '1937' in pencil (there is also a third unrecorded state), with the dedication 'for Eduardo Westerdahl', from the unknown edition size, the full sheet, light and time staining, a repaired 15mm. tear at the upper right corner, a repaired 5 mm. patch to the lower left corner and other minor defects, otherwise in very good condition, framed

Lewison recorded in Print Quarterly vol II no 2, June 1985, two states of this very rare linocut although there is at least one other state known, illustrated in Alan Cristea's Exhibition catalogue, Ben Nicholson Prints 1928-1968, October-November 2007. This work was never editioned nor apparently recorded, hence the number of copies of each state remains unknown.
The linocut represents a small body of work of geometric forms that was considered to be amongst the most important new styles in international abstract art. The influence of Piet Mondrian, who Nicholson met in Paris in 1934, is evident and can be seen in the simplified composition of circles and rectangles.
The work is dedicated by Nicholson to Eduardo Westerdahl, the Spainsh born art critic, writer and member of the Surrealist movement and illustrates the international recognition and importance these early works by Nicholson had. Eduardo Westerdahl was editor in chief of the art revue Gaceta del arte a highly respected European art and culture magazine. In addition to the many books he wrote on Surrealist art, Westerdahl established The Contemporary Art Museum Eduardo Westerdahl in Puerto de la Cruz (Canary Islands), which remains one of the most important museums for Spanish Contemporary art.
