Adriaan Cornelisz van Salm was one of the last artists who specialised in the en grisaille or penschilderij method of drawing - producing highly detailed pictures - using ink with a reed pen on panel or canvas. He concentrated mainly on depictions of merchantmen, whaling and herring fishing scenes, but was also known to have painted historical sea battles. There are several examples of his work in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
