Lot Essay

The ship takes her name from the celebrated Chilean General Manuel Baquedano Gonzales. Built in the late nineteenth century by Armstrong Whitworth at Barrow-in-Furness, General Baquedano weighed 2,500 tons and measured 240 feet. Somerscales' many depictions of the vessel is understandable as during her first years almost every Chilean naval officer had served aboard her.
