Lot Essay
In English's paintings, naked men confront each other across an imagined divide, or appear to wrestle in confined spaces. English marks out rooms with the minimum armature possible, so we see through walls into clandestine parties or tense locker rooms. The anonymous men, toned and pumped-up, have the intimacy of fraternities, whether sexual or social, and the almost monochromatic canvases seem to shudder with testosterone.
