Lot Essay

This capriccio is closely related to the Predica di un Apostolo, in the D'Arrigo collection in Nice; other versions of this painting can be found in the Denver Art Museum (cat. 432). This composition also shares similarities with the Rovine di costruzione corinzia, Arco di Giano quadrifronte, il vaso Borghese, Colonna Onoraria con saldati e sfaccendati, where the statue of a weeping ephebos, in the right of this painting, is replaced by the Borghese vase (F.Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e I fasti della Roma del 700, Rome, 1986, p. 444, fig. 430 and 431).
