Lot Essay

The artist's daughter comments that the present work has 'me standing on the edge of the pool (Finchley Road Baths), plaits tied on top of my head. This is one of the first paintings to show what would become a lifetime obsession with water, the conjunction of the shimmering surface appearance and the fracturing of objects seen below the surface' (private correspondence, 2 June 2011).
