Lot Essay
The authenticity of this work has been kindly confirmed by Rodrigo Muñoz.
Lucio Muñoz studied at the San Fernando Fine Arts School, Madrid, where he met fellow artists Antonio López García, Julio López Hernández and Amalia Avia (whom he married in 1960) - recognized as the most outstanding representatives of the so-called 'Madrilean Realism'. In Paris, in 1956, Muñoz was inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet and l'Art Autre, and thereby Abstraction. From his 'realistic' beginnings, he evolves to Informalism - canvases are substituted by wood panels, burned papers and waste materials and the expression of the surfaces become the focus of his work. In the latter stages of his career he made a return to realism though the medium of engraving and from the 1980s, wood became again the key aspect in his monochromatic and peaceful landscapes.
