Lot Essay

After having studied at the San Fernando Fine Arts School, Madrid, along with Julio López Hernández, Lucio Muñoz and his then wife, María Moreno, Antonio López became the most important and influential figure of the so-called 'Madrilean Realism'. His mastery in the treatment of light, atmosphere and form has often been related to hyperrealism, but the mystery of his portraits, interiors and landscapes place his work in a more profound and hermetic territory of art.
Mujer sentada (Woman, seated) is an extraordinary example of the early skills of the artist to engage with his viewer and imbue his figures with a sense of solemnity via the means of accurate line and colour. The figure here, concentrated looking at an infinite horizon, finds balance in an otherwise uneasy architectural space.
A seated nude figure entitled Academia by García sold Christie's Madrid, 6 October 2004, lot 22 (344,250 euros).
