George Samuel Elgood (1851-1943)
George Samuel Elgood studied at the South Kensington School of Art (later the Royal College of Art) and specialised in paintings of gardens. His works have an architectural sense of composition and a delicacy of tone and colour, putting him in a different class from all his competitors. His pictures were shown at the Fine Art Society between 1891 and 1925 and there are examples in the Royal Collection. The artist made a name for himself with his portrayals of formal Italian gardens such as the Villa Borghese (lot 96) and soon owners of country estates were commissioning Elgood to commemorate their gardens. The artist was particularly interested in representing English gardens he felt had historic interest, such as Penshurst (lot 97).
