Lot Essay

This pair of lions are modelled after the lions at the base of Canova's celebrated tomb for pope Pius XIII in St Peter's in Rome. These superb lions, are among the most beautiful creations by Canova, the vigilant lion, on the left, represents the energetic work of the Pope whilst the sleeping lion, symbolizes his moderation.
