A green schist relief with seated Buddha
Gandhara, 2nd/3rd Century
Buddha seated with his right hand raised in abhayamudra and the left clutching the folds of his sanghati, the face with downcast expression, the hair pulled over the prominent ushnisha and secured with a lotus headband, with the fronds of the Bodhi tree and angels above, flanked by adoring worshippers in various dress

Lot Essay

Please also compare with lot 234, which was most likely from the same frieze. The small symbol at the base of the relief was probably carved as a location marker to indicate the order in which the reliefs should be arranged.
