Lot Essay

This finely executed sculpture represents Shiva as Alingana Chandrashekara, 'Lord crowned with the Moon' embracing his consort. Such representations would likely have been used in processional ceremonies, where attached to palanquins and carried by priests, they would be led in to the temple to inspect the premises.
