CASE: waisted, the finial modelled as a woman, probably Amphitrite, glazed side panels, foliate mounts, front door with relief figure of Amphitrite with dolphin-cast shield and cherubs DIAL: ormolu and twenty-five piece enamel dial (some replaced chapters) signed 'ST MARTIN/A PARIS', gilded hands (possibly replaced) MOVEMENT: five vase-shaped pillars, twin barrels, now with anchor escapement, calibrated countwheel strike on bell, repeat signature; later pendulum, winding key

Lot Essay

Antoine Saint Martin, recorded rue des Fossés St-Germain 1715 and Place Dauphine 1741-1746. In 1734 he was Juré and in 1739 Garde (the Parisian clockmakers' guild was governed by the Jurande, comprising four members known as Jurés or garde-visiteurs, elected for two years at a time).
