Lot Essay

The large corn-yellow field colour as well as the purple in the mihrab used in this rug is a rare feature to find in rugs from Mujur. This combination of colours is one that is normally much more associated with rugs from Konya. A very similar prayer rug is illustrated by Peter Bausback (Antike Orientteppiche, Braunschweig, 1978, pp.100-101) but it has a less sparking green mihrab and a multicoloured inner border instead of the ivory one which lifts the overall appearance of the present lot so nicely.
