An Edwardian silver pepper grinder, London, 1903, fully marked, the grinder by Peugeot, indistinctly engraved "E.H.S. from H.R.M. 9th April 1904 There's many a prize ...." on the tapering cylindrical body. Provenance: By descent from the recipient to the present owner.

A wedding gift from Shackleton's friend, RGS librarian, and future biographer Dr Hugh Robert Mill ('On Saturday afternoon Christ Church, Westminster, was the scene of an interesting wedding, the bridegroom being Mr Ernest Shackleton, the Antarctic explorer and secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. The bride was Miss Emily Mary Dorman ... Dr Hugh Robert Well's (sic) present was a silver pepper mill, an exact replica of a similar mill which Dr Mill presented to the wardroom of the Discovery, stipulating that on the return of the expedition it should be balloted for among the members of the wardroom mess.'
