NORTH EAST IRAN, 12TH CENTURY
Of baluster form with vertical mouth on spreading trumpet foot, the associated handle linking the midriff and mouth with lion thumbpiece, the faceted domed cover with bird finial, the body moulded with vertical fluting around the midriff, engraved kufic inscription around the shoulder interspersed with three cartouches with birds engraved in relief, further band of calligraphy in muhaqqaq around the neck with letters inlaid with silver on a ground of scrolling vine, lid with band of kufic round edge and silver inlaid engraved rosettes interspersed with birds, areas of red patination

The inscriptions on this jug are as follows:

Around the neck in kufic, al-'izz wa al-iqbal wa al-dawla wa al-sa'ada wa al-salama wa al-ta[ma], 'Glory and prosperity and good fortune and happiness and well-being and entirety'.

Around the body in kufic, bi'l-yumn wa al-baraka al-kamila wa al-baraka wa al-bar[aka] wa al-baraka, 'With good fortune and complete blessing and blessing and blessing and blessing'.

Around the lid, a repeat of al-baraka, 'blessing'.
