Lot Essay

A very similar pillow case is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but with all the colours having faded to an even tan, so with a completely different appearance to the present example. The arrangement of patches is similar, and they are encompassed within an almost identical brocaded border. (James C.Y.Watt and Anne C. Wardwell, When Silk was Gold, Central Asian and Chinese Textiles, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1997, no.53, pp.182-184).
