Lot Essay

Mahmud ibn Sulayman al-Hanbali was born in Damascus in AH 644/1246-47 AD. He studied Hanbali law and Arabic literature. His best known work is the Diwan al-Isha'. There are other copies of the present work in Berlin, Leiden, the British Museum, the Topkapi Museum and in Cairo (C. Brockelmann, Geschichte der Arabischen Litteratur, Leiden, 1996, GI, 264; G II, 44 and 55 and S II, 43). This copy is however very early, and was copied by the author four years before his death.
