A CASED 14-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN
BY JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 6800 FOR CIRCA 1815-16
Reconverted from percussion, with rebrowned twist two-stage sighted barrel, patent breech with platinum-lined maker's stamp 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT' and inlaid with a single platinum line, platinum-lined touch-hole, foliate engraved tang, engraved flat lock with rainproof pan, roller and associated refaced steel engraved 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT', figured walnut half-stock (fore-end cracked through and repaired) with chequered grip, engraved iron mounts, horn fore-end cap, silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and associated brass-mounted ramrod with worm (minor surface wear to engraving, some discolouration to iron parts), London proof marks, in relined and refitted mahogany case with some accessories including embossed Hawksley violin-shaped brass-mounted copper powder-flask, mainspring clamp and wad-cutter, the lid with Joseph Manton trade label of circa 1820-25, the exterior with flash-fitting brass carrying handle and circular brass escutcheon (some old damage and repairs to corners and edge of lid)
