Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
In 1961, Suzanne Ramié opened a new Madoura gallery in Cannes. Located on the elegant Rue d'Antibes and decorated with furniture designed specifically for the occasion by Henri Bataille, this new place was the perfect setting for the presentation of works created by Pablo Picasso in Vallauris. Thus, for the first time in July and August 1963 in a chic atmosphere, electrified by his presence and combining artists, art lovers, collectors and all the personalities that the Riviera can offer during the summer months, Picasso unveiled a large set of 204 plates recently made by him. Those that were particularly well received were then reproduced as editions. The special reunion of twelve plates presented here, full of humour and verve, was part of this selection. These faces, in vivid colors and with spontaneous features, have continued to capture the imagination of collectors. Their popularity has never wavered and it is therefore difficult to find such a series composed of the most beautiful of them carefully selected for the quality of their finish. In addition, their tone is so decidedly and clearly irreverent, they are mischievous in their impertinence, a liberty taken by the artist to communicate on their behalf with the viewer. How can one resist such true and fresh creativity? Picasso had amused himself by becoming fluent in ceramic processes but life did not seem to hold any secrets for him with the slips, glazes, and other enamels. Picasso did not seem to miss anything, remaining curious about everything and constantly reinventing the ancient techniques of ceramics. This constant renewal, this life that Picasso breathed into all things is evident everywhere here. Every face, every expression demonstrates his consuming passion for life, for creation. - Yves Peltier PROPERTY FROM A DISTINGUISHED FRENCH PRIVATE COLLECTION
