Lot Essay

One of a group of drawings executed by Saftleven on the backs of playing cards. All similar in size and format, these rare drawings may originally have been intended to make up a pack of cards, although now only around twenty are known. Other examples in the series are listed in W. Schulz, Herman Saftleven 1609-1685, Berlin, 1982, nos. 1315-1327.
