Lot Essay

The present work was executed in circa 1925 in Marseilles or Toulon. Wadsworth was one of the first British artists to discover the Cote D'Azur to the east of these two major ports. As ever he was not so much fascinated by the sea as by the objects associated with seafaring and objects used more on sailing ships rather than steamers. From 1923 onwards sailing ships appear repeatedly in his compositions.

We are grateful to Jonathan Black for his assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
