Lot Essay

The motif of wispy white filaments was specific to Maddox's work between 1939 and 1940. The incorporation of a staircase within a figure began in 1939 and culminated in Maddox's monstrous anthropomorphic landscapes, which illustrated Stefan Schimanski's Knight and Devil, Billericay, 1942.
