Even as the paintings of significant Indo-European painters like Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merprès and Willem Gerard Hofker bearing Indonesian subject matters are well sought-after by Indonesian collectors today, there is a smaller but equally passionate number of these collectors who acquire works of these artists bearing foreign subjects, attesting to a bipartite interest in world visual cultures. We are proud to bring to present such a collection belonging to an Indonesian gentleman who had spent extensive time in the Netherlands. Leading the collection are two rare paintings of the holy Ghat of Varanasi along the river Ganges in Benares, India where Le Mayeur travelled to before settlling in Bali, Indonesia in 1932. The collection also comprises of intimate European still-lifes by Willem Gerard Hofker, two Balinese portraits in dramatically contrasting styles by Auke Sonnega, a Le Mayeur St.Tropez harbour painting and a portrait drawing of an Italian peasant girl completed by Rudolf Bonnet during his eight years living in Anticoli Corrado, Northeast of Rome. Produced in various faraway worlds and collected with a discriminating eye for quality, these works underline a disposition towards mutual appreciation of cultures that is both universal and imperative in art collecting.
