A red sandstone relief of Devi
India, Madhya Pradesh, circa 10th century
The celestial female standing with her right ankle crossed over the left, clad in a long dhoti with incised foliate pattern secured with a beaded and festooned girdle, adorned with bracelets, armlets, and necklaces, a sash swept about her shoulders and a bird resting on her left wrist, her face placid and sensual with almond eyes beneath arched brows, straight nose, and full lower lip, her hair arranged in wavy rows secured with a beaded headdress, backed by a halo and lush buds, attended by a dwarf, peacock, and a devotee
